Generation 1

THOMAS HOWES

Parents:

Thomas Howes married Mary Unknown. She married second, as his fourth wife, Gov. Thomas Prence in about 1667 or 1668. [Ref]

Mr Anthony Hatcher, Mr. Thomas Howes and Mr. John Crowe were originally chosen to apportion land in Yarmouth. This led to complaints and in Mar 1647/8 the Court appointed Capt. Miles Standish to visit the town and settle the differences. Mr. Star, William Nickerson and Robert Dennis were added to the committee to apportion land for the following year. This led to acrimoney and assorted defamation and slander suits by and against William and others. In Oct 1650 the Court ordered the suits to cease. [Ref, p. 58-9]

In Jun 1665 the court had ruled that Monomoit was part of Yarmouth. This was inconvenient as the two were not connected. In 1667 the constable of Yarmouth, Mr. Thomas Howes, met with a hostile reception. In Jun 1668 the court ruled that Monomoit was parat of Eastham. [Ref, p. 80]

  1. Joseph Howes was called the oldest son in his father's will. [Ref] He died on 19 Jan 1694/5. [Ref, pp. 10-12] Joseph Howes of Yarmouth married Elizabeth Mayo. [Ref, pp. 517-8] Elizabeth was the daughter of John Mayo of Eastham. [Ref, pp. 517-8]
    Joseph was admitted freeman in 1657. [Ref]

  2. Capt. Thomas Howes was buried on 20 Nov 1676. [Ref] He married Sarah Bangs in 1656. [Ref][Ref] Sarah was the daughter of Edward Bangs.

JEREMIAH HOWES (c. 1637 - 1708) of Yarmouth

Parents: Thomas Howes and Mary Unknown [Ref]

Jeremiah Howes was born about 1637. He died on 9 Sep 1708. The town records say 9 Dec 1708, but his will was proved in October. [Ref] He married Sarah Prence. [Ref]

Jeremiah is called the youngest son in his father's will. [Ref]

Jeremiah was admitted freeman in Jun 1663. [Ref]

Jermiah is buried in the Howes family burial ground in North Dennis (formerly Yarmouth). His gravestone says: "Here lyes ye Body / of Jeremiah Hows / Aged about 71 Years Who Departed / this life Sepr ye 9 / 1708". [Ref]

Jeremiah signed his will on 14 Aug 1708; it was proved on 6 Oct 1708. [Ref] In his will, he names his eldest son Jeremiah, deceased, and his widow Mary; sons Prince and Ebenezer; daughters Elizabeth Bacon, Sarah Mayo, Mary Howes, Bethia Howes, Mercy Sturgis, Susanna Bassett, Thankful Miller, Rebecca Howes. [Ref]

  1. Jeremiah Howes married Mary Daggett of Edgartown after 18 Oct 1693. [Ref]
  2. Prince Howes was born about 1669. He died on 2 Oct 1753, age 84. [Ref] Prince married Dorcas Joyce. [Ref] Dorcas was the daughter of Hosea and Elizabeth (Chipman) Joyce. Elizabeth Chipman was the daughter of Hope Howland and granddaughter of John Howland and Elizabeth Tilley. [Ref]
    Prince is buried in the Howes family burial ground in North Dennis. [Ref]

  3. Elizabeth Howes married Jeremiah Bacon of Barnstable on 10 Dec 1686. [Ref]
  4. Mary Howes was born about 1670. She died on 10 Jan 1728/9, age 58. [Ref, pp. 163-4] She married Dea. Joseph Hawes about 1695. [Ref, pp. 163-4]
    In a deed dated 27 Sep 1734, Joseph Hawes, gentleman, with his [second] wife Bethiah and children, relinquished all rights his wife Mary had had to lands and meadow in Bridgewater and Middleborough that had belonged to Gov. Prence to Cornelius Bennett. [Ref, pp. 163-4]
  5. Ebenezer Howes was born about 1673. He died on 8 Jan 1726. He married Sarah Gorham.
  6. Sarah Howes married Daniel Mayo of Eastham. [Ref] Daniel was born on 25 Jun 1664 in Eastham. [Ref]
  7. Mercy Howes married Samuel Sturgis on 17 Oct 1700. [Ref]

  9. Susannah Howes married Joseph Bassett on 27 Feb 1706/7. [Ref] Joseph was the son of Nathaniel and Dorcas (Joyce) Bassett and the grandson of William Bassett.

EBENEZER HOWES (c. 1673 - 1726) of Yarmouth and Middletown

Parents: Jeremiah Howes and Sarah Prence

Ebenezer Howes was born about 1673. He died on 8 Jan 1726, age 53. [Ref] married first Sarah Gorham on 20 Apr 1699 [Ref] in Yarmouth. [Ref] He married second Lydia Joyce on 2 Jan 1706/7 [Ref] in Yarmouth. [Ref] Lydia was the daughter of Hosea and Elizabeth (Chipman) Joyce and (through her maternal grandmother) the great granddaughter of John Howland and Elizabeth Tilley. She was born about 1685 and died after 21 Feb 1742/3. [Ref]

In his will, dated 3 Dec 1760, Ebenezer Howes of Middletown mentions his daughter Sarah Sears. [Ref] Ebenezer's will was proved on 13 Feb 1726/7. [Ref]

  1. Sarah Howes (twin) was born on 20 Jun 1699. She married Ebenezer Sears.
  2. Thomas Howes (twin) was born on 20 Jun 1699. [Ref, p. 16] He married Deborah Sears. [Ref, p. 16]

Sarah Howes was born on 20 or 11 Jun 1699. [Ref] She married Ebenezer Sears on 26 May 1720 [Ref] in Yarmouth. [Ref][Ref]

Sarah was admitted to the second church in Yarmouth from the first church on 6 Aug 1727. [Ref]
