Generation 1

JOHN CROWE (b. c. 1590/5) of Charlestown and Yarmouth

Parents:

John Crowe was probably born between 1590 and 1595. [Ref] He married Elishua Unknown. [Ref]

John and Elishua were in Charlestown by 1634. [Ref] Mr. John Crowe sold a dwelling house and land in Charlestown to Matthew Avery on 16 (4) 1638. [Ref]

He is in the Yarmouth section of the 1643 list of those between 16 and 60 able to bear arms in Plymouth Colony. [Ref]

Mr Anthony Hatcher, Mr. Thomas Howes and Mr. John Crowe were originally chosen to apportion land in Yarmouth. This led to complaints and in Mar 1647/8 the Court appointed Capt. Miles Standish to visit the town and settle the differences. Mr. Star, William Nickerson and Robert Dennis were added to the committee to apportion land for the following year. This led to acrimoney and assorted defamation and slander suits by and against William and others. In Oct 1650 the Court ordered the suits to cease. [Ref, p. 58-9]

  1. John Crowe married Mehitable Miller.
  2. Yelverton Crowe was probably born about 1620. He died between 23 Dec 1681 and 8 Mar 1683/4. He married Elizabeth Unknown.
  3. Moses Crowe was baptised on 24 (4) 1637 in the First Church in Charlestown. [Ref]
  4. Elizabeth Crowe married Arthur Perry of Boston. [Ref]
  5. Thomas Crowe was born about 1645. He died on 9 Mar 1689/90, age 45. [Ref, p. 110-1] He married Agnes Unknown.
    Thomas was an early settler of Yarmouth. [Ref, p. 110-1] By a deed dated 14 Feb 1673/4 he bought land in Monomoit and subsequently built a dwelling house. He also bought a meadow that he sold by a deed dated 13 Aug 1683. [Ref, p. 110-1]
    Inventory on Thomas's estate was taken on 15 Mar 1689/90. [Ref, p. 110-1] On 18 Apr 1690 his eldest son John and his brother Thomas agreend upon a settlement of Thomas's estate and undertook to maintain their mother Agnes as long as she remained a widow. [Ref, p. 110-1]

John Crowe married Mehitable Miller. [Ref, p. 9]

Children of John Crowe and Mehitable Miller:

  1. John Crowell was born on 3 Jan 1662 in Barnstable. He died on 15 Oct 1728 in Barnstable. He is buried in the Meeting House burial ground in North Dennis, Massachusetts. He married Bethiah Sears.
  2. Dea. Joseph Crowell was born on 20 Mar 1685. [Ref, p. 23] He married Bathsheba Hall on 27 Oct 1709. [Ref, p. 23]

YELVERTON CROWE (c. 1620 - 1683/4) of Yarmouth

Parents: John Crowe and Elishua Unknown [Ref]

Yelverton Crowe was probably born about 1620. [Ref] He died between 23 Dec 1681, when he signed his will, and 8 Mar 1683/4, when it was proved. [Ref] Yelverton's wife is said to have been named Elizabeth. [Ref]

Researchers have often said that Yelverton and John Crowe were brothers, more likely Yelverton was the son of John and Yelverton's daughter Elishua was named after her paternal grandmother. [Ref]

Yelverton was at South Sea in West Yarmouth in 1640. [Ref] He is in the Yarmouth section of the 1643 list of those between 16 and 60 able to bear arms in Plymouth Colony. [Ref] He was a surveyor of highways on 2 Jun 1646. [Ref] He was a freeman by 3 Jun 1657. [Ref]

In his will, "Elverton Crowell alias Crow of Yarmouthe" mentions his sons Thomas, John, Edward and Samuel; his wife, the mother of Thomas; his granddaughter Elizabeth Gifford. He does not mention his daughters Elishua, Elizabeth and Mary. [Ref]

  1. John Crowell was born about 1642. [Ref] He married Hannah Unknown about 1680. [Ref]
  2. Edward Crowell was born about 1644. [Ref] He married Mary Lothrop of Barnstable on 16 Jan 1673. [Ref] Mary appears to be the daughter of Capt. Joseph and Mary (Ansell) Lothrop and the granddaughter of Rev. John Lothrop and Hannah Howse.
  3. Samuel Crowell was born about 1646. [Ref] He died on 12 Apr 1723. [Ref] He married Hannah Unknown about 1675. [Ref]
  4. Elishua Crowell was born about 1647/8. She married John Gifford.
  5. Thomas Crowell (twin) was born on 9 May 1649. [Ref] He died on 22 Apr 1722. [Ref] He married Deborah Unknown. [Ref]
  6. Elizabeth Crowell (twin) was born on 9 May 1646. [Ref] She died after 1683. [Ref] She married Samuel Matthews. [Ref] Samuel and Elizabeth moved to Cape May, NJ. [Ref]
  7. Yelverton Crowell was born about 1651. [Ref] He died before 1683. [Ref]
  8. Mary Crowell was born about 1653. [Ref] She died on 18 Sep 1727. [Ref] She married first Joshua Allen. [Ref] Joshua may be the son of George Allen of Sandwich.[Ref] He died on 27 Dec 1699 in Windham, CT. Mary married second, as his second wife, William More on 17 Jul 1700. [Ref] William married third Tamar Simons. [Ref] Joshua and Mary Allen had a son named Yelverton. [Ref] Yelverton, the son of John Gifford, calls William More of Windham his uncle in a 1713/4 deed.

John Crowell was born on 3 Jan 1662 in Barnstable. [Ref] He died on 15 Oct 1728 in Barnstable. [Ref] John Crowell, Jr. married Bethiah Sears [Ref, p. 9] on 27 May 1684 in Chatham. [Ref][Ref]

  4. Elizabeth Crowell was born on 20 Oct 1700 in Chatham. [Ref] She died on 24 Jan 1778 in Yarmouth. [Ref] She married Benjamin Homer [Ref, 29;99] on 22 Dec 1721 in Yarmouth. [Ref] Benjamin was the son of John Homer and Margery Stephens. [Ref] He was born on 8 May 1698 in Boston and died on 24 Oct 1776 in Yarmouth. [Ref, says Feb][Ref]

Elishua Crowell was born about 1647/8. She married John Gifford.

BETHIA CROWELL (1689 - 1752)

Parents: John Crowell and Bethiah Sears [Ref, p. 9]

Bethia Crowell was born on 13 Apr 1689 in North Dennis, Massachusetts. [Ref, p. 9] Bethia, the wife of Joseph, died on 2 Jan 1752, age 63, and is buried in Eastham. [Ref, 8;2] She married Joseph Atwood [Ref, 80;17] on 12 Oct 1710 [Ref, p. 9] in Yarmouth. [Ref]

Bethia was granted 30 pounds in the settlement of her husband's estate on 20 Mar 1740. [Ref, p. 10]
