WILLIAM CHAPLIN 1 (d. 1575/8) of Long Melford

William Chaplin died after 15 Nov 1575, when his will was dated, and before 25 Jan 1577/8, when it was proved. [Ref]

In his will, William calls himself a yeoman of Long Melford. He mentions his brothers Clement and Thomas; his sister Johan Ballard; Mary Greengrass, daughter of John Greengrass. An Edmund Chaplin was a witness.

  1. William Chaplin 2 was buried on 15 Oct 1629 in Semer. He married first Agnes Unknown.
  2. Alice Chaplin married Robert Parke 1.

WILLIAM CHAPLIN 2 (d. 1629) of Semer and Bury St. Edmunds

William Chaplin was buried on 15 Oct 1629 in Semer. [Ref] He married Agnes Unknown. She was buried on 26 Sep 1602 in Semer. [Ref]

William was a chandler of Bury. [Ref]

  1. William Chaplin of Blockeshall [Ref]
  2. Clement Chaplin died after 16 Aug 1656, when he wrote his will, and before 23 Sep 1656, when his widow Sarah proved it. [Ref] He married Sarah Hinds, whose father was a goldsmith of Bury. [Ref] Clement went to New England and was one of the elders of Mr. Hooker's congregation. [Ref]
    In his will, he refers to himself as a clerk of Thetford, Norfolk. He left his wife Sarah all of his houses and lands in Hartford and Weathersfield. He mentions his brother Thomas Chaplin of Bury St Edmunds and his kinsman Mr William Clarke of Roxbury. [Ref]
  3. Edmund Chaplin of Semer had many children. [Ref]
  4. Thomas Chaplin married Elizabeth, the sister of Thomas's brother Clement's wife Sarah Hinds. [Ref] Thomas was a linen draper in Bury; an alderman and justice of the peace for the county of Suffolk. [Ref]
  5. Richard Chaplin of Semer had no children. [Ref]
  6. Capt. Robert Chaplin of Bury married Elizabeth, the daughter of Francis Austy of Bury. [Ref] Robert was the father of a lord mayor of London; the grandfather of a baronet; an ancestor of all viscounts Chaplin and Canterbury, all barons Manners and various other peers. [Ref]
  7. Martha Chaplin was baptised on 4 Feb 1583/4 in Semer. She probably died by 1643. She married Robert Parke 2.
  8. Daughter Chaplin married Unknown Barrett of Stratford. [Ref] Her father left her £300. [Ref]
  9. Daugher Chaplin married Unknown Smith of Semer. [Ref]

Alice Chaplin married Robert Parke 1 of Gestingthorpe in 1579 in Sudbury, Suffolk. [Ref]

MARTHA CHAPLIN (bp 1584) of Semer

Parents: William Chaplin 2 and Agnes Unknown

Martha Chaplin was baptised on 4 Feb 1583/4 in Semer. [Ref] She probably died by 1643. [Ref] She married her first cousin Robert Parke 2 of Woolpit. [Ref] Her father left her £300. [Ref] It is unknown if she came to New England. [Ref]
