Rev. Henry Whitfield was born in 1597 in Mortlake, England. [Ref] He died in Sep 1657 in Winchester, England. [Ref] He married Dorothy Sheafe in 1618. [Ref]

Henry and Dorothy emigrated to New England in 1639. [Ref] Henry was the leader of the group that settled in Guilford, CT. [Ref] They returned to England in 1696. [Ref]

His house in Guilford is now a museum.

Thomas Whitfield married Fortuna Mildred Manning. [Ref]

In 1594 the manor of East Sheen and Westhall was sold to Thomas Whitfield by Henry Brasbrydge and Alice his wife. A dispute in the following year when Thomas complained that Brasbrydge had sold separately some of the customary lands which should have been included in the manor. [Ref] In 1619 the manor was conveyed to John Juxon by Thomas Whitfield, John Whitfield and Elizabeth his wife. [Ref]

In 1607, Thomas Whitfield, lord of the manor of East Sheen and Westhall, donated lands for the upkeep of the parish church. [Ref]

3. FORTUNA MILDRED MANNING

Fortuna Mildred Manning married Thomas Whitfield. [Ref]

  1. John Whitfield, Esq. of Mortlake married Elizabeth Culpepper on 25 May 1611. [Ref] Elizabeth, the daughter of Sir Edward and Elizabeth (Farnfold) Culpepper was baptized on 13 Dec 1584 in Ardingly. [Ref] She died on 23 May, 1624. [Ref]
    As their marriage settlement, says (in part), "[Sir Edward Culpeper]will convey to Thomas Whitfield all those marsh lands called Hoe marsh in Sussex ...Thomas Whitfield on his part doth covenant and grant with the said Sir Edward that he is seized of 100 acres of marsh in Olderton Inning in Brookland, co. Kent. Also of a messuage in All Saints Barking near Tower Hill, London. Also of a messuage and 3 score and ten acres in Staplehurst co. Kent. Also of the ancient manor house of Eastsheen in Mortlake and of the manors of East Sheen and Westhall and of 190 acres of land in Mortlake and of the capital messuage in Mortlake where the said Thomas now dwells. Also of 100 acres in Minster in the Isle of Sheppey. He promises to hand over the marsh land in Brookland and the property in Staplehurst to their use until the marriage is completed. He further covenants that if his son John Whitfield before the feast of St Andrew the Apostle in 1616 shall fitly and worthily for his learning in the common Law of this Realm of England be called and admitted in Lincoln's Inn to be an outer barrister in which house the said John is now a student, that then the said Thomas Whitfield will suffer to discend and come unto the said John such estate in the manor of Whitfield in the county of Northumberland as he the said Thomas shall think fit to the value of £800 ... Mortlake is also to go to John at Thomas' death." [Ref]

Robert Whitfield died between 6 Dec 1591, when he signed his will, and 16 Feb 1597, when it was proved. [Ref] He married Agnes Atwood. [Ref]

In his will, Robert Whytfeld, gentleman, of Worth in Sussex, mentions Myldred and Mary, my son's wives; his daugher Johane Baker; his other daughters, Margaret, Sara, Jane and Frances; John, the eldest son of Thomas. [Ref]

Agnes Atwood married Robert Whitfield. [Ref]

Children of Robert Whitfield and Agnes Atwood:

  1. Thomas Whitfield married Fortuna Mildred Manning.
  2. Rev. William Whitfield died between 15 Oct 1610, when he signed his will, and Mar 1610/[1], when it was proved. [Ref] He married Mary Kempe. [Ref] In his will, William refers to him self as the vicar in Mayfield in Sussex. He mentions his wife Mary. [Ref]
  3. Johane Whitfield married Robert Baker. [Ref] Robert Baker died between 24 May 1585, when he wrote his will, and 16 Oct 1585, when it was proved. [Ref] In his will, Robert says that he is of Wythiham in Sussex; he mentions his wife Johane and his brother-in-law Thomas Whitfield. [Ref]

6. HENRY MANNING (living 1560) of Downe and Greenwich

Parents: John Manning and Agnes Petley [Ref, p. 56]

Henry Manning married Katherine Kirkener about 1555. [Ref, p. 56]

Henry was a Knight Marshal, or Marshall of the Household, during the reigns of Henry VIII, Edward VI, Mary and Elizabeth. [Ref, p. 57]

Henry sold Downe Court in 1560. [Ref, p. 58] He moved to Greenwich. [Ref, p. 56]

His father-in-law, Erasmus Kirkener, left him three yards of crimson satin for a doublet. [Ref]

7. KATHERINE KIRKENER (d. 1596)

Parents: Erasmus Kirkener and Agnes Unknown [Ref]

Katherine Kirkener died in 1596 in Downe. [Ref, p. 58] She married Henry Manning about 1555. [Ref, p. 56]

After her husband's death she may have gone back to Downe, perhaps to live with her son Henry. [Ref, p. 58]

In her will, dated 4 Feb 1594 and proved 26 Jan 1596, Katherine Manning of Downe mentions her daughter Dorothy Manning; her son Henry Manning, Doctor of Law; her daugher Lady Margaret, Vicountess of Bynden; her daughter Anne Ayelmer; her daughter Mildred Fortune Whitefeilde; her daugher Katherine Ludlow; her son Erasmus Waller; her cousin Catherine Underhill of Greenwich; her son-in-law Thomas Whitfield. [Ref]

Children of Henry Manning and Unknown Kirkener:

  1. Dorothy Manning
  2. Henry Manning died between 14 Jun 1614, when his will was signed, and 29 Oct 1614, when it was proved. [Ref] He was a doctor of laws. [Ref, p. 58] He was chancellor of the diocese of Exeter. [Ref, p. 58] He had ten children. [Ref, p. 58]
    In his will, Henry calls himself Doctor of Laws and Chancellor of the Diocese of Exeter. He mentions his will-beloved brothers Thomas Whitfield, Esq. of Morteloke; Emmanuel Badde. Esq. of Farehame, Southampton; Edward Haydon, gentleman, of Bradley, Wiltshire. [Ref]
  3. Katherine Manning married Unknown Ludlow.
  4. Margaret Manning was baptised on 30 Nov 1559 in Downe. [Ref, p. 57] She married as his fourth wife Thomas Howard, first Viscount Bindon. [Ref, p. 58] She married second Unknown Ludlow. [Ref, p. 58] Thomas Lord Howard, Viscount Howard of Bindon died between 24 May 23 Elizabeth, when he signed his will, and 14 Feb 1582, when it was proved. [Ref]

8. ROBERT WHITFIELD (d. 1541/3) of Wadhurst

Robert died bewtween 1541, when he signed his will, and 2 Mar 1542, when it was proved. [Ref]

In his will, Robert Whitfelde the elder of Wadhurst in Suffolk asks to be buried in the churchyard at Wadhurst. He mentions his wife Agnes and children John, Thomas, Elizabeth and Robert.

Robert is on the Subsidy Roll of 1523 as a large owner of lands in Wadhurst. [Ref]

9. AGNES UNKNOWN

Children of Robert Whitfield and (presumably) Agnes Unknown:

  1. John Whitfield died between 14 May 1585, when he signed his will, and 15 Jun 1585, when it was proved. [Ref] In his will, he refers to himself as a yeoman of Kent. [Ref]

  4. Robert Whitfield married Agnes Atwood.

10. WILLIAM ATWOOD of Kent

12. JOHN MANNING (d. 1542) of Downe

John Manning died in 1542. [Ref, p. 56] He is buried in the church in Downe. [Ref] He married first Agnes Petley. [Ref, p. 55][Ref] He married second Thomasin Unknown. [Ref]

John was a yeoman of Downe. [Ref, p. 56] He died in possession of the manor of Downe Court. [Ref]

  1. Hugh Manning of Todington was born in 1557. [Ref] He died in 1558. [Ref]

13. AGNES PETLEY

Parents: John Petley [Ref, p. 54][Ref] and Christiana Philipott [Ref]

Agnes Petley is buried in the church in Downe. [Ref] She married John Manning. [Ref, p. 55][Ref]

Children of John Manning and Agnes Petley:

  1. George Manning died in 1582. [Ref, p. 59] He married in 1543. [Ref, p. 56] He left his wife £20 and "her chamber furnished". [Ref, p. 59] He lived in Downe. [Ref, p. 56] He had 19 children. [Ref, p. 56]
  2. Henry Manning married Katherine Kirkener.
  3. John Manning died between 5 Mar 1566, when he signed his will, and 9 May 1567, when it was proved. [Ref] He married Agnes Unknown. In his will he says that he is of Lambeth, Surrey; he mentions his brother George; his brother Harry; his brother Harry's wife; his own deceased wife Agnes. [Ref]
  4. Richard Manning died between 11 Oct 1544, when he signed his will, and 22 Nov 1544, when it was proved. [Ref] He married Agnes Unknown. In his will, he mentioned his wife Agnes, he left his brother John all of the debts owed to him by their brother George and made his brother Henry his executor. [Ref] He was a merchant tailor in London. [Ref]

14. ERASMUS KIRKENER (c. 1495 - 1567) of East Greenwich

Erasmus Kirkener was born about 1495. He died between 27 May 1667, when he wrote a codicil to his will, and 2 Jun 1567, when it was proved. [Ref] He married Agnes Unknown. [Ref]

In 1520 Henry VIII set up a workshop in Greenwich to make armour and recruited craftsmen, mainly from Germany. By 1558 this workshop consisted of the Master Workman, his Clerk, a Yeoman, nine hammerman, three millmen, three locksmiths, two labourers, an apprentice and a guilder. During the 1530s Erasmus Kirkener, who was probably German, became the Master Workman. [Ref, p. 734]

The Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum has a reinforcing breastplate (plackard) that belonged to William Herbert, first Earl of Pembroke, and was made by Erasmus Kirkener (c. 1495 - 1567). [Ref]

In his will, dated 4 Sep 1566, Erasmus Kirkener, armorer of East Greenwich, Kent, mentions his kinsmen Leonard Geball; his daughters Katherine Manning, Anne Michell and Susan Manning; his sons-in-law Henry Manning, William Michell and William Manning; his wife Agnes. [Ref]

15. AGNES UNKNOWN (d. 1591/3)

Agnes Unknown died between 3 Sep 1591, when she signed her will, and 25 Jan 1593, when it was proved. [Ref] She married Erasmus Kirkener. [Ref]

In her will, Agnes mentions her daughter Manning; her cousin Susanna Hinde; her daughter's son William Michel; her daugher's son William Michel. [Ref] Her daughter Katherine and her son Mr. Doctor Manning are executors. [Ref] Her will was proved by Katherine and Henry Manning, doctor of Laws. [Ref]

Children of Erasmus Kirkener:

  1. Katherine Kirkener died in 1596 in Downe. She married Henry Manning.
  2. Anne Kirkener married William Michell.
  3. Susan Kirkener married William Manning. William Manning died between 4 Oct 1573, when he wrote his will, and 12 Feb 1573, when it was proved. [Ref] William mentions his uncle Henry Manning, gentleman and his wife Susan. [Ref]

24. HUGO (HUGH) MANNING (living 1518) of Cray

Parents: John Manning [Ref, p. 55][Ref] and Juliana Brockhill [Ref]

Hugo Manning was of Cray. [Ref, p. 55] He married Margaret Brandon. [Ref][Ref][Ref, p. LXXV gives her first name]

In 1518 Westminster abbey leased the demesnes and rectory of Teddington manor to Hugh Manning for 30 years. [Ref]

25. MARGARET BRANDON

Unknown Brandon married Hugh (Hugo) Manning. [Ref][Ref]

  1. John Manning died in 1542. He married Agnes Petley.
  2. Richard Manning of Cray is the ancestor of the Mannings who lived in St. Mary Cray until 1753. [Ref, p. 55]

26. JOHN PETLEY (living 1506) of Downe

John Petley married Christiana Philipott. [Ref]

John Petley was a yeoman of Downe. [Ref, p. 54] He and his wife's father, John Manning, bought land in Downe from Richard Goode in 1501 and Thomas Farthing in 1506. [Ref, p. 54]

It was during the reign of Henry VIII that the family began spelling their name as "Petley". [Ref]

50. SIR WILLIAM BRANDON

Sir William Brandon was a kinsman to Charles Brandon, Duke of Suffolk. [Ref]

Anderson [Ref, p. LXXV] wonders if Hugh John named in the 1491 probate of Sir William Brandon could be Hugh (son of) John Manning. He says that according to the 1619 visitation of Kent, the wife of Hugh Manning was a paternal aunt of Charles Brandon, 1st Duke of Norfolk, husband of Princess Mary Tudor. See [Ref]. In this case, Margaret would be a younger daughter Margaret of Sir William Brandon and his wife Elizabeth Wingfield. There is apparently no other evidence of this.
