Chronology: From Visit Portland Maine 1632 English settlers inhabited the Portland Peninsula, called Machigonne by the Indians name Machigonne and Casco by the settlers 1652 Casco became part of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. 1658 Its name was changed by Falmouth. 1675 Falmouth is destroyed by Indians during King Phillip's War. 1775 The British shell and burned the city of Falmouth. 1776 Falmouth is established as a commercial port and begins to grow. 1786 Falmouth is renamed Portland. 1820 Maine became a state with Portland as its first Capital. |
