Lowthorp is a small parish in the wapentake of Dickering, in the East Riding of York, four and a half miles northeast from Great Driffleld, having about 160 inhabitants. [Ref, p. 3]

Generation 1

JOHN LOTHROP (d. 1558) of Cherry Burton

Parents: Unknown. The first mention of the Lothrop family in the records is if Walter de Lowthorpe, Sheriff of Yorkshire in 1216. [Ref, p. 4]

John Lowthorpe was assessed in Cherry Burton in 15 Henry VIII (1523-4) and in North Burton in 32 Henry VIII (1540-1). [Ref]

James Carter and his wife Agnes and Thomas Layton and his wife Isabel petitioned the court of the Star Chamber. They said that they were seised of an acre of land in South Dalton, Yorkshire, with appurtenances in Cherry Burton. In 24 Henry VIII (1532-3), they grew wheat on the land. Then John Lawthrop, William Bynkys, Robert Lawthorpe, William Patton and John Burne forcibly took the wheat on the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary (15 Aug) in 25 Henry VIII (1533-4) and assaulted James Carter, badly wounding him. John Lothrop responded that he was not guilty of any riot or other misdeanor and that, furthermore, the King had pardoned all who committed riots and misdemeanors before 3 November. [Ref]

John Lowthroppe appears on a Yorkshire subsidy roll in the 37th year of Henry VIII (1545). He was assessed more that twice as much as any other inhabitant of the parish. [Ref, p. 15] He left a son Robert. [Ref, p. 15] He also left three daughters, mentioned in Robert's will.

ROBERT LOTHROP (d. 1558) of Cherry Burton

Robert Lothrop died in 1558. [Ref, p. 15] He married Ellen Unknown. [Ref, p. 15] She died in 1572. [Ref, p. 15]

Robert Lothrop at Isabella Lowthorpe's [Ref]was assessed at Burton in 35 and 36 Henry VIII (1543 - 5).

Robert Lothrop signed his will on 16 Jul 1558; it was proved on 20 Oct 1558. [Ref, p. 15] He mentions his sons John, Thomas, Lawrence; his daughter Margaret; his wife Ellen; his three sisters; his six male servants; his three maid servants; the children of William Burne; the sons of Henry Sowersby; others. [Ref, p. 15]

Ellen also left a will. She named her eldest son Thomas and his children Robert, Elizabeth, and Isabella and Robert's wife, Alice Clarke [?]; her son Lawrence, and his wife Elizabeth and their children; her daughter Margaret, the wife of Robert Hodgeson, and her own sister Margaret.

  1. John Lothrop's father left him land and tenements in South Dalton, the land in Burton that Robert purchased from Richard Fenle and Marmaduke Whytinge. In the even of his death they were to go to his son Lawrence. He was also left a "gray stoned horse", a cow and a couple of stotes. [Ref, p. 15-17]
  2. Thomas Lothrop was born in Cherry Burton. He died in 1606. He married first Elizabeth Unknown. He married second Mary Unknown. He married third Jane Unknown.
  3. Margaret Lothrop married Robert Hodgeson.
    Her father left her a messuage in Beverlaie. If she died without issue it was to go to his son Lawrence. He also left her a cow in consideration of the his father had left her and he had sold, a lead, a table, two chairs, two trestles and a forme with a great ... with eaves, two basings, two lavers, two candlesticks, two pieces of pewter and the best beast from Beverlaie. [Ref, p. 15-17]
  4. Lawrence Lothrop married Elizabeth Unknown.
    His father left him a "bright bay gelding" and two stotes. [Ref, p. 15-17] Lawrence Lowthorpe was taxed in North Burton in 39 Elizabeth (1996-7). [Ref]

Generation 3

THOMAS LOTHROP (d. 1606) of Etton and Cherry Burton

Parents: Robert Lothrop and Ellen Unknown

Thomas was born in Cherry Burton. [Ref, p. 17] He died in 1606. [Ref, p. 17] He married first the widow Elizabeth Clark. [Ref, p. 17] She was buried on 29 Jul 1574 in Etton. [Ref, p. 17] He married second Mary Unknown. [Ref, p. 17] She was buried on 6 Jan 1588 in Etton. [Ref, p. 17] He married third Jane Unknown. [Ref, p. 17] After his death, she married Unknown Coppendale. [Ref, p. 17]

His father left him his lands and appurtenances in Walkinton; two "fermolds" in Burton and Rainthorpe were to be his after Ellen's death. He was also left an "ambling gelding, dapple gray", "two draughts nante — a hawked and browne— and fourtie (40) weathers such as he will choose", coat of mail, a battle ax and a steel cap. [Ref, p. 15-17]

Thomas moved to Etton, Harthill wapentake, East Riding Yorkshire about 1576. [Ref, p. 17]

Thomas and (presumably) his son-in-law William Akyett were taxed at Etton in 39 Elizabeth (1596-7). [Ref] Robert Lowthorpe (presumably his son), Lawrence Lowthorpe (presumably his brother) and Robert Patterson (presumably a relation of his daughter-in-law) were taxed in North Burton in 39 Elizabeth (1996-7). [Ref]

Thomas signed his will on 13 Jan 1606/7; it was proved on 5 Oct 1606. He mentions his wife Jane; his sons Richard, Mark, Lawrence; Joseph and Bartholomew; his daughters Katherine Aket and Isabell Burne; the children of his daughter Audrey Wykam. He leaves money to his wife to care for his young children. He does not mention his two sons, Thomas and John, who were already educated. [Ref, p. 17-8]

  1. Robert Lothrop was born in Cherry Burton. [Ref, p. 18] He married Ann Pattison on 27 Jan 1607/8. [Ref, p. 18] He is mentioned in his grandmother Ellen's will.
  2. Katherine Lothrop died after 13 Jan 1606/7, when she was mentioned in her father's will and before 20 Oct 1628, when her brother Thomas mentioned her husband, but not her, in his will. She married William Akett of Leconfield, co. York.
  3. Audrey Lothrop died before 13 Jan 1606/7, when her father mentions her children, but not her, in his will. She married Unknown Wickham.
  4. Elizabeth Lothrop married Thomas Rowood on 19 Feb 1587/8. [Ref, p. 18] Perhaps she died childless before 13 Jan 1606/7, as she is not mentioned in her father's will. [Ref, p. 17-8] She is mentioned in her grandmother Ellen's will.
  5. Anne Lothrop was baptised on 13 Feb 1568/9 in Etton. [Ref, p. 18] She died young. [Ref, p. 18]
  6. Isabell Lothrop was baptised on 3 Jul 1570 in Etton. [Ref, p. 18] She married Unknown Burne. She is mentioned in her grandmother Ellen's will.
  7. Martin Lothrop was baptised on 21 Oct 1572 in Etton. [Ref, p. 18] He was buried on 12 Nov 1572. [Ref, p. 18]
  8. Andrew Lothrop was baptised on 23 Apr 1574 in Etton. [Ref, p. 18] He may have died before 13 Jan 1606/7, as he is not mentioned in her father's will.

  1. Anne Lothrop was baptised on 29 Jul 1576 in Etton. [Ref, p. 18]
  2. Mary Lothrop married John Gallant, according to the will of her brother Thomas. Her brother Richard mentions a sister Mary Garwood in his will; perhap she married a second time. Neither Anne nor Mary were mentioned in their father's wills, although Mary at least was clearly alive. Perhaps they were born after their brothers and were among the young children not mentioned by name.
  3. Rev. Thomas Lothrop was baptised on 14 Oct 1582 in Etton. [Ref, p. 18] He died in 1629. [Ref] He married Elizabeth Unknown.
    He signed his will on 20 Oct 1628; it was proved on 6 May 1629. [Ref] He mentions his daughters; his wife Elizabeth; his brothers John Lathrop and William Lathrop; his sister Mary, the wife of John Gallant; his brother-in-law William Akett of Leconfield, co. York. [Ref]
    He was admitted sizar at Queen's College, Cambridge on 30 Jan 1601. [Ref] He took his bachelor's degree in 1604/5 and his masters degree in 1608. [Ref] He was rector of Dengie in Essex. [Ref]
  4. Rev. John Lothrop was baptised on 20 Dec 1584 in Etton. He died on 8 Nov 1653. He married first Hannah Howse. He married second Anne Unknown.
  5. William Lothrop was baptised on 24 May 1587. [Ref, p. 19] He died after Jan 1659/60, when he was mentioned in the will of his brother Mark.

  1. Margaret Lothrop was baptised on 13 Feb 1590/1 in Etton. [Ref, p. 19] It is possible that she is the Margaret Bateman in his brother Mark's will.

  3. Lucy Lothrop was baptised on 4 Jan 1593/4 in Etton. [Ref, p. 19] She married Ralph Cawnsby on 16 Jun 1613. [Ref, p. 19] She died after Jan 1659/60, when she was mentioned in her brother Mark's will.
  4. Richard Lothrop was baptised on 19 Oct 1595 in Etton. [Ref, p. 19] He died between 8 Feb 1640/1, when he signed his will, and Jun 1641, when it was proved. [Ref, p. 19] He married Dorothy Lowdon. She died in 1645 in Cherry Burton. [Ref, p. 19]
    Richard settled in Cherry Burton. [Ref, p. 19] In his will he mentions his children; his wife Dorothy; his mother Jane Coppendale; his brother Joseph; his brother Bartholomew; his sister Mary Garwood; and William Lowthrop's son. [Ref, p. 19] Dorothy signed her will on 15 May 1641; it was proved on 9 May 1645. [Ref, p. 19] In her will, Dorothy mentions her children; her mother Mary Brown; her mother Jane Coppendale; her brothers and sisters Lowson; her brother Lawrence Lowthrop and his brother Bartholomew Lowthrop. [Ref, p. 19]
  5. Mark Lothrop was baptised on 27 Sep 1597 in Etton. [Ref, p. 19] He died between Jan 1659/60, when he signed his will and 17 Apr 1660, when it was proved.
    He moved to North Cave, near Cherry Burton, in Yorkshire. [Ref, p. 19]
    In his will, he mentions his brother Bartholomew, his brother William, Margaret Bateman, his sister Lucy and his sister Jane. [Ref, p. 19] His will proves that he is not the Mark Lothrop who died in West Bridgewater. [Ref, p. 19]
  6. Lawrence Lothrop was baptised on 29 Aug 1599 in Etton. [Ref, p. 20] He died after 1659, when he was mentioned in his nephew Richard's will.
  7. Jane Lothrop was baptised on 14 Mar 1600/1 in Etton. [Ref, p. 20] She died after Jan 1659/60, when she was mentioned in her brother Mark's will.
  8. Joseph Lothrop was baptised on 31 Dec 1602 in Etton. [Ref, p. 20] He died after 1659, when he was mentioned in his nephew Richard's will.
  9. Bartholomew Lothrop was baptised in Etton on 1 Mar 1604/5. [Ref, p. 20] He died after Jan 1659/60, when he was mentioned in his brother Mark's will.

REV. JOHN LOTHROP (bp. 1584 - 1653) of Etton, Southwark, Scituate and Barnstable (bp. 1584 - 1653)

Parents: Thomas Lothrop and Mary Unknown [Ref, p. 18]

John Lothrop was baptised on 20 Dec 1584 in Etton. [Ref][Ref] He died on 8 Nov 1653. [Ref] He married first Hannah Howse. [Ref] She died in 1633, while her husband was imprisoned. [Ref] He married second Anne Unknown probably in 1635. [Ref]

In 10 Oct 1610 a license was issued for the marriage of John Lothrop, M.A., curate of Egerton and Hannah Howse of Eastwell, virgin. [Ref]

John Lothrop is mentioned in the 20 Oct 1628 will of his brother Rev. Thomas Lothrop. [Ref]

John Lowthroppe of Yorkshire, age 16, was admitted a pleb of Christ College, Oxford on 15 Oct 1602. [Ref] He received his BA from Cambridge University in 1605 and his MA in 1609. [Ref]

He was the curate of the church in Egerton, co. Kent from about 1611 to 1623. [Ref] In 1623 he renounced his orders under the Church of England. [Ref] He replaced the Rev. Henry Jacob at the First Independent Church in Southwark, Surrey. [Ref] The church's illegal meetings were held in secret [Ref] but they were discoved by the authorities on 29 Apr 1632. [Ref] He was imprisoned in 1632 and released on bail in 1634. [Ref][Ref]

John and went to New England on the Griffen, which arrived on 18 Sep 1634. [Ref] He and the thirty church members who accompanied him went to Scituate on 27 Sep 1634. [Ref] The church split in 1639 and Lothrop left to become the minister in Barnstable. [Ref] More information about John is available in the "Early History" section of the Scituate page.

John was a freeman on 7 Jun 1637. [Ref]

John's will is dated 10 Aug 1653; inventory was taken on 8 Dec 1654. [Ref] He names his son Thomas, his son John in England, his son Benjamin and his daughters Jane and Barbara. [Ref]

    Samuel came to New England with his father in 1634. [Ref, p. 38-40] He settled in Barnstable and then moved to New London in 1648. [Ref, p. 38-40] He was judge in the court for small causes in 1649. [Ref, p. 38-40] He moved to Norwich in 1668. [Ref, p. 38-40] He was constable in 1673 and 1682. [Ref, p. 38-40]
  7. Capt. Joseph Lothrop [Ref] was born in 1624, probably in Lambath, London. [Ref, p. 40-1] He died between 9 Oct 1700, when he signed his will, and 9 Apr 1702, when it was proved. [Ref, p. 40-1] He married Mary Ansell on 11 Dec 1650. [Ref, p. 40-1]
    Joseph came to New England with his father in 1634. [Ref, p. 40-1] He was made freeman on 8 Jun 1655. [Ref, p. 40-1] He was deputy for Barnstable for 15 years.     Benjamin settled in Charlestown. [Ref, p. 41] He was a selectman in Charlestown in 1688. Goodwife Martha Lathrop was admitted to the church in Charlestown in 1660. [Ref, p. 41]

  4. Bathsheba Lothrop was baptised on 27 Feb 1641 in Barnstable. [Ref, p. 41-2] She died on 8 Jan 1723. [Ref, p. 41-2] She married first Benjamin Beale. She married second, probably as his second wife, Alexander Marsh. [Ref, p. 41-2] He died between 19 Mar 1697, when he wrote his will, and 7 Mar 1698, when it was proved. [Ref, p. 41-2]
  5. John Lothrop was born on 9 Feb 1644 in Barnstable. [Ref, p. 42] He died on 18 or 28 Sep 1727. [Ref, p. 42] He married first Mary Cole of Plymouth in 1639. [Ref][Ref, p. 42, says "Cobb", with "Cole" handwritten over] He married second Hannah, the widow of Dr. John Fuller, on 9 Dec 1695. [Ref, p. 42]
    He was a mariner: the captain of the Swan. In his will, his father says that John is in England, but Deane [Ref] says that he returned and settled in Barnstable.

THOMAS LOTHROP (c. 1621 - 1707) of Barnstable

Parents: Rev. John Lothrop and Hannah Howse

Thomas was born about 1621, based on his deposition that he was about 80 on 4 Apr 1701. [Ref, p. 38] He died in 1707. [Ref, p. 38] He married Sarah Learned on 11 Dec 1639 in Boston. [Ref, p. 38] His father recorded the marriage as: "My sonn Thomas and brother Larnett's daughter, widow Ewer, were married in the Bay (Boston) Dee. 11, 1639." [Ref, p. 38]

In his will, his father refers to Thomas as his eldest son. [Ref][Ref, p. 38] He left him his house in Barnstable. [Ref]

Thomas was admitted to the church in Scituate on 4 May 1637. [Ref, p. 38] He moved with his father to Barnstable in 1639. [Ref, p. 38] He was a land surveyor in 1641 in Barnstable. [Ref, p. 38] He is on the 1648 list of those able to bear arms. [Ref, p. 38] He was made freeman on 8 Jun 1656. [Ref, p. 38]

Mary Lothrop was born on 4 Oct 1640 [Ref, p. 45] in Barnstable. [Ref] SShe was living in 1735. [Ref, p. 45] She married first John Stearns on 20 Nov 1656 [Ref, p. 45] in Barnstable. [Ref][Ref] She married second Capt. William French on 6 May 1669 [Ref, p. 45] in Billerica. [Ref][Ref] She married third Isaac Mixer, Jr. of Watertown [Ref, p. 45, om 1684] as his third wife. [Ref][Ref]

William French was born on 15 Mar 1603 in Halsted, co. Essex. [Ref] He died on 20 Nov 1681. [Ref] He married first Elizabeth Unknown. [Ref] She died on 31 Mar 1668. [Ref] William was a captain of the militia. [Ref] He was the first representative to the general court from Billerica, appointed in 1660. [Ref]

Isaac Mixer, the son of Isaac Mixer of Capel, England, was born in 1630 in England. [Ref] He married first Mary, the daughter of John Coolidge. [Ref] He married second Rebecca, the daughter of Edward Garfield. [Ref] Isaac was the brother of Mary's first husband's first wife.
