THOMAS JUDD of Hartford and Farmington

Thomas Judd joined the Farmington church on 13 Oct 1652. [Ref] His wife joined about a month later. [Ref] His children were baptised on 10 Apr 1658. [Ref]

Children of Thomas Judd:

  1. Elizabeth Judd was born about 1633/6. [Ref] She died after 1716. [Ref]
  2. William Judd was born about 1733/6. [Ref] He died in 1690. [Ref]
    Administration on his estate was granted to his widow and John Judd on 5 Nov 1690. [Ref 1;475] His estate amounted to about £694. [Ref 1;475]
  3. Thomas Judd, Jr. was born about 1638 in Hartford. [Ref]
    He may be the "Thomas Judd the Smith" who took inventory of his brother Philip's estate on 2 Nov 1689. [Ref 1;474] Either he or someone else is also refered to as Ens. Thomas Judd. [Ref 1;474] on 7 Apr 1703, Dea. Thomas Judd of Waterbury rendered an account of the estate of Philip Judd. [Ref 1;474]
  4. John Judd was born about 1640. He was baptised on 10 Apr 1658 in Farmington, age 17 in about Mar 1657. [Ref] He died after Mar 1691/2 when he was one of those granted administration on his brother Benjamin's estate. [Ref 1;474]
  5. Benjamin Judd was born about 1642. He was baptised on 10 Apr 1658 in Farmington, age 15 in about Mar 1657. He married Mary Lewis.
  6. Mary Judd was born about 1644. She was baptised on 10 Apr 1658 in Farmington, age 13 in about Feb 1657. [Ref]
  7. Ruth Judd was born about 1646. She was baptised on 10 Apr 1658 in Farmington, age 11 in about Feb 1657. [Ref]
  8. Philip Judd was born about 1649. He was baptised on 10 Apr 1658 in Farmington, age 8 in about Jan 1657. [Ref] He died before 2 Nov 1689 when inventory was taken on his estate. [Ref 1;474]
    Philip was of Waterbury. [Ref 1;474] Philip's estate amounted to about £329, as well as land at Farmington worth £90. [Ref 1;474] Administration on his estate was granted to his widow on 11 Nov 1689. [Ref 1;474]
  9. Samuel Judd was born about 1651. He was baptised on 10 Apr 1658 in Farmington, age 6 in about Dec 1657. [Ref]

BENJAMIN JUDD (c. 1642 - 1689) of Hartford and Farmington

Benjamin Judd was born about 1642. He was baptised on 10 Apr 1658 in Farmington, age 15 in about Mar 1657. [Ref] He died in 1689 in Hartford. [Ref] He married Mary Lewis [Ref] in 1667. [Ref 4;1843]

Benjamin was a freeman in 1669 in Farmington. [Ref 4;1644]

On 28 Oct 1675 the Farmington church considered the request of William, Thomas, John and Benjamin Judd and John Standley, Jr. to move to Mattatuck (later Waterbury). The church cautioned them of the dangers and pointed out that they might not be better off in terms of land. The church members wondered why someone as materially well off as William would want to move. [Ref]

Benjamin Judd and his wife were in full communion in the church in Farmington on 1 Mar 1679. [Ref]

Administration on Benjamin's estate was granted to his widow on 6 Nov 1689. [Ref 1;474] Inventory was taken in 1689. Benjamin's estate amounted to about 267 pounds. His legatees were Benjamin Judd, age 18 years, Mary 14, Sara 12, Hannah 8, Nathaniel 6, Hester 3, Jonathan, one year old. [Ref 1;474] Apparently his wife died not long after Benjamin and administration on Benjamin's estate was granted on Mar 1691/2, to his son Benjamin, his (presumably) brother John Judd and his (presumably) brother in law William Lewis on Mar 1691/2. [Ref 1;473-4] Benjamin's children were named as Benjamin, age 21 years, Nath aniel 8, Jonathan 3, Mary 16, Sarah 14, Hannah 11, Easter, 6 years old. [Ref 1;473]

Children of Benjamin Judd and Mary Lewis:

  1. Elizabeth Judd was born on 21 Aug 1668 in Farmington. [Ref] She died by 1689.
  2. Benjamin Judd was born about 1671. He married Susanna North. [Ref 4;1644]
    He joined the church in Farmington on 9 Feb 1706/7. [Ref 4;1644]
  3. Mary Judd was born about 1675.
  4. Sarah Judd was born about 1677. She married Thomas Buck of Middletown on 12 May 1709. [Ref 4;1644]
  5. Hannah Judd was baptised on 13 Mar 1680/1 in Farmington. [Ref] She married Gershom Smith on 4 May 1710. [Ref] Gershom was the son of Jonathan and Hannah (Adams) Smith. [Ref] He was born the last of Nov 1679. [Ref] He died on 29 Aug 1747 in Glastonbury. [Ref]
  6. Nathaniel Judd was baptised on 22 Jul 1683 in Farmington. [Ref]
  7. Esther Judd was baptised on 14 Feb 1685 in Farmington. [Ref] She died on 22 Dec 1782 in Bernardstown, MA. [Ref] She married Jonathan Webster on 14 Dec 1704 in Hartford. [Ref] Jonathan, the son of Dea. John and Dorcas (Hopkins) Webster, was born on 18 Mar 1682 in Hartford and died on 18 Sep 1758. [Ref]
    After her parents' deaths, Esther chose Joseph Webster to be her guardian on 7 Mar 1701/2.
  8. Jonathan Judd was born about 1688. He was baptised on 23 Sep 1688 in Farmington. He died on 2 Aug 1725. He married Hannah Diggens.

Generation 3

JONATHAN JUDD (abt 1688 - 1725) of Glastonbury and Middletown

Parents: Benjamin Judd and Mary Lewis

Jonathan Judd was born about 1688. He was baptised on 23 Sep 1688 in Farmington. [Ref] He died on 2 Aug 1725, age 37. [Ref][Ref says 2 Aug] He married Hannah Diggens on 27 Nov 1712 [?] in Glastonbury. [Ref]

On 3 May 1714 Benjamin and Jonathan Judd asked the court for a new distribution of [their uncle] John Lewis's estate as they had not been considered in the original distribution. The court denied the request and Jonathan appealed to the superior court on 22 May 1714. [Ref 1;474]

Jonathan lived on the east side of the river in Middletown. [Ref]

Jonathan was a member of the church organised in East Middleton in 1721. [Ref]

Inventory on the estate of John Lewis of Farmington was taken on 20 Oct 1694. His brothers and sisters, Philip, Samuel, William, Ebenezer and James Lewis,
Hanna Marsh, Sarah Boltwood, and Felix Selden took oaths. The court granted administration to Samuel and William Lewis and ordered the estate distributed to the brothers and sisters. On 3 May 1714 Benjamin and Jonathan Judd asked for a new distribution as they were not previously considered. The court asked William Lewis to appear in court. On 22 May 1714 Benjamin and Jonathan Judd presented their motion, but it was not granted and Jonathan then appealed to the Superior Court. [Ref]

On 5 Aug 1735 an account of the estate of Jonathan Judd of Middletown was exhibited in court by Hannah. Inventory on his estate was taken by Samuel Hall and Ebenezer Hurlbut on 5 Oct 1735. Inventory taken by Samuel Hall and Ebenezer Hurlbut. Administration was granted to his widow Hannah and to Francis Smith of Middletown. [Ref]

  1. Philip Judd was born on 13 Jan 1713/4 in Glastonbury. [Ref] He married Mary Peters. [Ref]
  2. Jonathan Judd was born on 31 Dec 1715 in Glastonbury. [Ref] He married Hannah Hubbard. [Ref]
  3. Hannah Judd (twin) was born on 20 Oct 1717 in Middletown. [Ref] She married Elisha Taylor. [Ref]
  4. Mary Judd (twin) was born on 20 Oct 1717 in Middletown. [Ref] She married first her first cousin Ethell Judd on 4 Jul 1737. [Ref] Ethell, the son of Nathaniel, was born on 8 Dec 1710 in Wallingford and died on 24 Feb 1742. [Ref] Mary married second Abner Graves of Kensington on 21 Apr 1743. [Ref]
  5. Thomas Judd (twin) was born on 26 Aug 1720 in Middletown. [Ref] He married Julia Dow. [Ref]
  6. Timothy Judd (twin) was born on 26 Aug 1720 in Middletown. [Ref] He married Lois Curtis. [Ref]
  7. Sarah Judd was born on 26 Sep 1722 in Middletown. She married Jabez Clark.
