Generation 1
JOHN JOHNSON (aft. 1580 - 1659)
of Ware, Great Amwell and Roxbury
Parents: Unknown
John Johnson was born after 1580. He died on 30 Sep 1659 in Roxbury. [Ref,
p. 2] He married first Mary Heath on 21
Sep 1613 in Ware. [Ref][Ref,
pp. 1105-10] He married second Margery Unknown. [Ref,
pp. 1105-10] She was buried on 9 Jun 1655 in Roxbury. [Ref,
pp. 1105-10] Margery probably came to New England in 1633. [Ref,
pp. 1105-10] John married third Grace (Negus) Fawer [Ref,
p. 2] by 1656. [Ref, pp. 1105-10] Grace was the widow
of Barnabas Fawer. [Ref, p. 2][Ref,
pp. 1105-10] She died between 21 Dec 1671, when she signed her will, and 29
Dec 1671, when it was proved. [Ref, pp. 1105-10]
John came to New England in 1630 and settled in Roxbury. [Ref, pp. 1105-10]
John Johnson is listed on both the 19 Oct 1630 and 18 May 1631 lists of freemen.
[Ref] He had land in Roxbury in 1634/43. [Ref]
He is on a 1634/1643 list of Roxbury goat owners. [Ref]
He was deputy for Roxbury from 1634 to 1657. [Ref, pp.
1105-10] He was appointed to the Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company in
1638. [Ref, pp. 1105-10] He was Surveyor General of Arms
and Ammunition on 8 Sep 1642. [Ref, pp. 1105-10] On 21
Feb 1648 and on 23 Feb 1652 he was appointed a rater. [Ref]
John's house in Roxbury caught fire in Mar 1645. John was away and men rushed
to help put out the blaze until they remembered that the house contained a substantial
amount of the colony's gunpowder. The explosion that occurred when the powder
caught fire was said to have shaken houses in Cambridge and Boston and the loss
was estimated at four or five hundred pounds. [Ref, pp.
1105-10]
John was freed from military training upon payment of 10 s. a year to the company
on 31 Oct 1639. A year later he was freed again, this time without payment,
in regard to his public service. As military training was not compulsory after
age 60, this implies that John was not yet 60 in 1640 and, hence, was born after
1580. [Ref, pp. 1105-10]
The court granted Mr. John Johnson 300 acres for his services as surveyor general
on 6 May 1657. [Ref, pp. 1105-10]

friends". [Ref, pp. 1105-10]
John Johnson made his will on 30 (7) 1659; it was proved on 15 Oct 1659. [Ref]
John mentions his "beloved wife", his "five children", and
Elizabeth and Mehitable Johnson, his two grandchildren who had always lived
with him. His sons Isaac Johnson and Robert Pepper were executors and he asked
his "dear brethren" Elder Heath and Isaac Park to be overseers. Inventory
was taken on John's estate on 15 Oct 1659 and it amounted to £623. [Ref,
pp. 1105-10]
"John Johnson was the confidant of powerful men, filled an important position
in the affairs of the early colony and in the development of its defenses ...
He owned a considerable estate at his death. With all these advantages, he kept
a low profile in his personal life and never achieved a consistent rank of 'Mr.'".
[Ref, pp. 1105-10]

father was from New Hampshire and his mother was from Maine. [Ref]
Arthur Walker's 1920 passport application says that he was born on 18
Feb 1873, an obvious error given his marriage date. However, he also claims
to be 46. It says that he was 5'10-1/2" tall with blue grey eyes
and dark hair. It says that he was a planter and going to Mexico to grow
agricultural products. It gives his father's name. [Ref]
