JOHN JENNEY (d. 1643/4) of Plymouth

Parents:

John Jenney died between 28 Dec 1643, when his will was dated, and 25 May 1644, when inventory was taken on his estate. [Ref] John Jenney of Norwich, England married Sarah Carey of Moncksoon, England on 1 Nov 1614 in Leyden. [Ref] Sarah died between 4 Apr 1654, when her will was dated and 18 Feb 1655, when inventory was taken on her estate. [Ref]

John, his wife Sarah and his son Samuel were in lot 12 of the 22 May 1627 Plymouth cattle division. [Ref]

On 2 Jan 1632/3 the General Court appointed John to a committee to assess taxes on the colonists, payable in grain or the equivalent. [Ref,Ref] He was again on the committee to set rates on 2 Jan 1633/4. Both years he was assessed relatively high taxes. [Ref]

In his will, dated 30 Jul 1633, Samuel Fuller the Elder left John Jenny 'a pair of gloves of five shillings'. [Ref]

On 1 Jan 1633/4 the General Court ruled that Thomas Higgens, having lived an extravagent life, should serve as an apprentice to John for eight years. Afther the period John was to give him "double appell, 12 bushel of corne, [and] 20 acres of land." [Ref]

John is in the Plymouth section of the 1643 list of those between 16 and 60 able to bear arms in Plymouth Colony, but his name is crossed out in the original. [Ref]

John named Mr. William Bradford and Mr. Prence overseers of his will and left each of them a pair of gloves costing five shillings. [Ref]

William and Alice Bradford witnessed Sarah's will; the inventory on her estate amounted to £248.5.8. [Ref] She mentions a son-in-law Bein Bartlett.

  1. Samuel Jenney. His father left his eldest son a double portion in his will. [Ref] He is in the Plymouth section of the 1643 list of those between 16 and 60 able to bear arms in Plymouth Colony. [Ref] His mother mentions him in her will. [Ref] On 6 Jan 1633/4 the General Court ruled that, as his father had consented, Samuel would be bound as an apprentice to Kanelm Winslow, joiner of Plymouth, for four years so that Samuel might learn Winslow's trade. [Ref]
  2. Abigail Jenney married Henry Wood. In his will, her father writes, "Where Abigail my eldest daughter had somewhat given to her by her grandmother and Henry Wood of Plymouth aforesaid , is a suter to her in way of marriage, my willl is that if she dwell one full year with Mr. Chas. Chauncey of Scituate before her marriage (provided he be willing to entertain her) then she have two cows and my full consent to marry." [Ref] Her mother mentions Abigail Wood in her will. [Ref]

  5. Susan Jenney. Her father mentions his daughter Susan in his will. [Ref] Her mother mentions her deceased daughter Susannah Pope in her will. [Ref]
