James Jackman was born about 1611/8. He died on 30 Dec 1694 in Newbury, [Ref] at age 83. [Ref, p. 306] He married Joanna Unknown. [Ref, p. 306]

It is said that he is from Exeter, Devonshire, England. [Ref, p. 306]

On 1 Mar 1651 a committee was appointed in Newbury to settle claims arising from the sale of freehold rights. It was reported that James Jackman had purchased a freehold right from Giles Abbott. [Ref, p. 93]

James was on the trial jury at the 27 d. 7 m. 1653 court in Ipswich. [Ref, 1;289] He took the oath of fidelity in Sep 1653. [Ref, 1;306] He was on the trial jury at the 31 Mar 1657 court in Ipswich. [Ref, 2;11] He was freed from training after paying six shillings in Mar 1661. [Ref, 2;279] He took the Oath of Allegiance in Newbury in 1678 at age 60. [Ref] He was on the grand jury at the 24 Sep 1678 court in Ipswich. [Ref, 7;82] He was appointed a tithingman for the following year on 24 Mar 1679. [Ref, p. 117] James, Sr. was a appointed a tithingman for 1683. [Ref, p. 118]

James Jackman and Joane Jackman testified about the estate of Henry Fay on 24 Sep 1656. [Ref, 1;407] James Jackman and Robert Long were appointed administrators of Henry Fay's estate in Mar 1656/7. [Ref, 1;420]

He took the Oath of Allegiance in Newbury in 1678 at age 22. [Ref] He is the Newbury section of the 13 Feb 1683/4 list of freemen. [Ref] He was a fence viewer for the old town neck on 22 Mar 1685/6. [Ref, p. 116]

On 13 Jul 1707 James Jackman, Sr. commanded about twenty soldiers [presumably in Newbury]. [Ref]

  1. Joanna Jackman was born on 25 May 1687 in Newbury. [Ref] She probably married John Short on 27 May 1708 in Newbury. [Ref, pp. 59-60] Mary is probably the Mary Jackman who married Daniel Eastman on 16 May 1760 in Newbury. [Ref] Daniel, the son of Roger and Jerusha (Fitts) Eastman, was born on 29 Sep 1733 in Salisbury, Essex, Massachusetts. [Ref] The Daniel who was the son of Roger and Jerusha died on 17 Sep 1763 in Salisbury. [Ref]
    Daniel was the grandson of John Eastman, the grandson of John Eastman and the great-grandson of the immigrant Roger Eastman. [Ref, pp. 59-60]
    Rix says that Daniel moved to Maine after his wife's death. It is possible that Rix is confusing Daniel's death with Mary's. [Ref, pp. 59-60]
  7. Ruth Jackman was born on 6 Apr 1741 in Newbury. [Ref] She was baptised on 12 Apr 1741 in Byfield Parish. [Ref][Ref, 2;60] Ruth, the wife of Elias Cheney, died on 19 Feb 1774 and was buried in Byfield. [Ref, 7;152] Ruth of Byfield, Rowley married as his second wife Elias Cheney on 9 Mar 1768 in Newbury. [Ref] Elias, the son of Moses and Sarah Cheney, was born on 20 Feb 1741 in Newbury. [Ref] He was baptised on 28 Feb 1741/2 in the Byfield Parish. [Ref, 2;60] He married first Jane Plumer on 7 Sep 1762 in Rowley. [Ref] He married second Hannah Pike of Byfield, Rowley on 8 Jun 1774 in Newbury. [Ref] Hannah, the daughter of John and Sarah (Moody) Pike, was born on 4 Jul 1744. [Ref, 121;169]

Timothy Jackman was born on 13 Jul 1729 in Newbury. [Ref] He died on 8 Jul 1795 in Newbury. [Ref] He is buried in the Byfield parish cemetery. [Ref] Timothy Jackman, Jr. of Rowley married first Mary Thurston of Rowley on 2 Apr 1751 in Newbury. [Ref] Mary died of a "consumptive disorder" on 27 Oct 1767, age 33 or 36, in Newbury. [Ref][Ref] Mrs. Molly Jackman is buried next to her husband in the Byfield parish cemetery. [Ref] Timothy married second Hannah Jackman of Rowley on 10 Feb 1768 in Newburyport. [Ref][Ref: Intention dated 27 Dec 1767 in Rowley] Hannah died on 7 Oct 1778, age 56, in Newbury or Rowley [Ref][Ref] of "a languishing disorder". [Ref, 7;155] Hannah might have been a widow or she might have been his first cousin Hannah Jackman. Timothy married third Anne Adams on 22 Feb 1779 in Rowley. [Ref][Ref][Ref]

Timothy and his family lived in the Byfield parish. Byfield is now a village in Newbury but parts of Byfield were orginally in Rowley.

  1. Sarah Jackman was baptised on 19 Jan 1752 in the Byfield parish. [Ref][Ref, 6;51] Sarah J. Jewett died on 6 Apr 1839, age 87, and is buried in the Byfield parish cemetery. [Ref] She married Jeremiah Jewett 3rd on 31 Dec 1772 in Ipswich. [Ref][Ref: Intention dated 31 Oct 1772 in Rowley] Jeremiah, the son of Jeremiah and Elizabeth Jewett, was born on 10 Jan 1745 in Rowley. [Ref] He was baptised on 13 Jan 1745 in Newbury and died on 22 Apr 1808 in Newbury. [Ref][Ref] He is buried next to his wife. [Ref]

  2. Hannah Jackman was baptised on 29 Jul 1753 in the Byfield parish. [Ref] She died on 15 Dec 1839. [Ref, p. 503] Hannah Jackman of Byfield, Rowley married as his second wife Rev. Eliphaz Chapman, "a lay preacher" of Rowley, on 18 Aug 1772 in Newbury. [Ref] Eliphaz, the son of Samuel Chapman, was born on 7 Mar 1750 in Newmarket, Rockingham, New Hampshire and died on 20 Jan 1814 [Ref] of consumption [Ref, p. 209]. He married first Sarah Hutchins. [Ref, p. 208]
    Samuel was the grandson of Samuel Chapman, the great-grandson of Samuel Chapman and the great-great-grandson of the immigrant Edward Chapman who came to Ipswich, Essex, Massachusetts in 1644. [Ref, p. 503]
    Hannah and Eliphaz moved to Sudbury, Middlesex, Massachusetts in Feb 1791. [Ref, p. 503] They moved to Bethel, Oxford, Maine [Ref] in 1789. [Ref, p. 208] Eliphaz preached for a number of years in Madbury, Strafford, New Hampshire before moving to Bethel. [Ref, p. 207]
    Eliphaz was a miller. [Ref, p. 207] He was the first representative from Bethel to the Massachusetts legislature. [Ref, p. 209] He was a justice of the peace. [Ref, p. 209]
