JOHN HILL (d. 1644) of Dorchester

Parents:

John Hill died on 31 May 1644. [Ref] He married Frances Unknown. [Ref] She was born about 1608. [Ref] She died between 13 Feb 1667/8, when she was taxed, and 1680. [Ref]

Frances was admitted to the Dorchester church about 1638. [Ref]

John is first mentioned in the Dorchester records on 6 Jan 1633/4. [Ref] He was granted land in Dorchester on 18 Feb 1636, 2 Jan 1637/8 and 18 Mar 1638. [Ref]

In his will, dated 11 Apr 1660, John mentions his eldest son John; his son Samuel; his daughter Mary; his wife Frances. [Ref]

John lived in that part of Dorchester called Uncaty (now Milton). [Ref]

  1. John Hill was born about 1630. He died on 23 Jan 1717/8. He married Hannah Unknown. He married second the widow Elizabeth Bullard.
  2. Frances Hill was born about 1632. [Ref] She died on 18 Nov 1676 in Dorchester. [Ref] She married, as his second wife, Jonas Austin, Sr. of Taunton, on 14 Dec 1667. [Ref] Jonas died on 30 Jul 1687 in Taunton. [Ref]
    Frances was dismissed to the church in Taunton on 28 Jun 1674. [Ref]
  3. Rebecca Hill was born about 1634 in Dorchester. [Ref] She died on 13 May 1676. [Ref] She married Joseph Gray of Taunton on 25 Feb 1667/8. [Ref]
    Rebecca was dismissed to the church in Taunton on 12 Feb 1664/5. [Ref]
  4. Mary Hill was born about 1636. [Ref] She died on 15 Aug 1726. [Ref] She married Thomas Breck on 12 Feb 1656/7. [Ref] Thomas died on 23 Apr 1703. [Ref]
    Thomas and Mary lived in Sherborn. [Ref]
  5. Samuel Hill was born and baptised in 1638. [Ref] He died on 12 Jan 1708/9. [Ref] He married Martha Unknown about 1667. [Ref] She died on 13 Sep 1715 in Dorchester. [Ref]
    Samuel was a husbandman. [Ref]
  6. Jonathan Hill was baptised on 12 Jul 1640 in Dorchester. [Ref] He married Mary Unknown. [Ref]
    Jonathan was a tailor of Bridgewater. [Ref]
  7. Hannah Hill was baptised in Dec 1641. [Ref] She married Daniel Fisher of Taunton about 1662. [Ref]
    Hannah was dismissed to the church in Taunton on 18 Feb 1671/2. [Ref]
  8. Mercy Hill was baptised on 8 Jan 1642/3. [Ref] She died on 7 Jul 1709. [Ref] She married Elkanah Willis of Bridgewater. [Ref] Elkanah, the son of Nathaniel Willis, was born on 20 May 1639 in Sandwich. [Ref] He died on 12 Dec 1711. [Ref]
    Elkanah was a school master and "much respected" citizen of Bridgewater. [Ref]
  9. Ruth Hill was born in Aug 1644. She died on 1 Sep 1736 in Sudbury. She married Roger Willis.
  10. Ebenezer Hill was born about 1644 in Dorchester. [Ref] He died in the spring of 1696. [Ref] He married first Ruth Bailey about 1683. [Ref] Ruth was the daughter of Guido and Elizabeth Bailey of Bridgewater. [Ref] Ebenezer married second Sarah Unknown about 1692. [Ref]
  11. Israel Hill died before 31 Jul 1677, when administration on his estate was granted to his brother Ebenezer. [Ref] He was killed by the Indians. [Ref]
    Israel was a carpenter of Dorchester. [Ref]
  12. Martha Hill was baptised on 20 Aug 1648. [Ref]
  13. Mehitable Hill was baptised on 18 Feb 1650/1. [Ref] She died, unmarried, on 5 Mar 1679. [Ref]
    Mehitable must have lived in Sudbury with her sister Ruth and Ruth's husband. When Ruth's family moved to Dorchester during King Philip's War, Roger Willis was charged with her support. [Ref]

JOHN HILL (c. 1630 - 1718) of Sherborn

Parents: John Hill and Frances Unknown [Ref]

John Hill was born about 1630. [Ref, p. 4] He died on 23 Jan 1717/8. [Ref, p. 4] He married first Hannah Unknown [Ref] about 1653. [Ref, p. 5] Hannah died in Nov 1690. [Ref, p. 5] She received a bequest from Abraham Martin of Rehoboth. [Ref, p. 5] John married second Elizabeth, the widow of Benjamin Bullard of Sherborn, about 1693. [Ref, p. 5] She died on 1 Dec 1719. [Ref, p. 5]

In 1657 he was one of those who purchased a large tract of land from the Indians and founded the town of Sherborn. [Ref, p. 4]

On 18 Feb 1712/3 John deeded half of his homestead to his daughter Abigail and her husband James Adams. [Ref, p. 4]

John signed his will on 10 Dec 1717. He mentioned his daughter Abigail and her husband James Adams; his eldest son Samuel Hill; his sons Ebenezer, John and Eleazer Hill; the heirs of his daughter Abigail Leland; his daughter Mary Ellis; the heirs of his daughter Hannah; the heir of his his daughter Sarah. The executors of his will were his son Samuel Hill and his wife's son Ebenezer Bullard. [Ref, p. 4]

  1. Dea. Samuel Hill was born about 1654. [Ref][Ref, p. 5] He died on 24 Mar 1723. [Ref] He married Hannah Twitchell on 4 Nov 1679. [Ref] Hannah was the daughter of Benjamin Twitchell and Mary Riggs. [Ref]
    Samuel was a husbandman in that part of Medfield that was later Medway. [Ref] He was a deacon in Medfield. [Ref]
  2. Ebenezer Hill was born about 1656. [Ref, p. 5]
  3. Abigail Hill was born on 2 Feb 1657/8 in Medfield. She died on 5 Oct 1689 in Sherborn. She married Dea. Hopestill Leland.
  4. John Hill was born on 14 Mar 1660/1 in Medfield. [Ref, p. 5] He died on 23 May 1738. [Ref, p. 5] He married Hannah Rockwood about 1693. She was the daughter of Dea. Samuel and Hannah (Ellis) Rockwood of Medfield. [Ref, p. 8] She was the granddaughter of Nicholas Rocket [Rockwood]. She was born on 1 Oct 1673. [Ref, p. 8] She died on 7 Feb 1729/30. [Ref, p. 8]
