  2. James Ensign was baptised on 1 Jun 1606 in Rye, Sussex. [Ref] He died between 23 Nov 1670, when he wrote his will, and 2 Mar 1670/1, when it was proved. [Ref] He married Sarah Unknown. [Ref]
    James migrated to New England in 1634. [Ref] He was admitted to the Cambridge church before 4 Apr 1634/5. [Ref] He moved to Hartford by 1639. [Ref] He was the brother of Thomas. [Ref]

THOMAS ENSIGN (d. 1663/4) of Scituate

Parents: Thomas Ensign and Constance Pilcher

Thomas Ensign died between 16 Jul 1663, when he signed his will, and 9 Jun 1664, when it was proved. [Ref] He married Elizabeth Wilder on 17 Jan 1638/9 in Plymouth Colony, as his second wife. [Ref]

Thomas Ensign bought James Cudworth's house in Scituate between 1634 and 1637. [Ref] He was one of the Conihassett Partners of Scituate.

In his will, Thomas mentions his wife Elizabeth, son John, daughter Hannah, daughter Hannah's son Thomas Sheppard, daughter Sarah and his wife's sister's daughter Sarah Underwood. [Ref]

The will of Thomas's son John strongly suggests that Thomas had two living daughters named Hannah.

Children of Thomas Ensign:

  1. Thomas Ensign died before 3 Sep 1657, when his will was proved. [Ref] In his will, Thomas Ensign of Cranbrooke, Kent, mentions his father Thomas Ensign in New England, his brother John and his sisters Hannah and Sarah. [Ref]
  2. John Ensign died on 26 Mar 1676 in King Philip's War, the same day that his sister Hannah Wade's brother Joseph was killed. [Ref]
    He chose James Cudworth as his guardian on 4 Aug 1658. [Ref] His will is dated 5 Jul 1676 [!] and was proved on 28 Oct 1676. He mentions his mother Elizabeth Ensign, his daughter Hannah Ensign, his sister Hannah Sheppard's son Thomas Sheppard, Jr., his sister Hannah Wade's sons Jacob and Joseph and her daughter Silence and his sister Sarah Wade. His mother and his brother Thomas Wade were joint executors. [Ref]
  3. Sarah Ensign probably married first her sister in law Hannah's brother Joseph Wade. [Ref][Ref] She married second Thomas Mann. [Ref]
  4. Hannah Ensign was baptised on 6 Jul 1640 in Hingham. [Ref] She died on 14 Mar 1697/8. [Ref] She married Thomas Shepard on 19 Nov 1658. [Ref][Ref] Thomas died on 26 Sep 1719 in Milton. [Ref]

  1. Hannah Ensign married Thomas Wade.
