THOMAS CHANDLER 1 (abt 1475 - 1548/51) of Bishops-Stortford

Parents: Unknown

Thomas Chandler was born about 1475. [Ref] He was living on 19 Mar 1547/8, but died in or before 11 - 31 Jan 1550/1. [Ref] He married an unknown wife who was buried in 1514. He was charged for 'waste of torchis' at the burying of his wife. [Ref]

Thomas was a chaundler, or candle maker, of Bishops-Stortford. [Ref] He was a churchwarden there in 1521, 1522 and 1536. [Ref]

THOMAS CHANDLER 2 (b abt 1500) of Bishops-Stortford

Thomas was born about 1500. [Ref] He died as early as 1554, when he made his will. [Ref] He married Agnes Unknown. [Ref]

He was a churchwarden in 1546, 1548 and 1553. [Ref]

In his will, he mentions his wife Agnes, his sons John and Thomas, and his daughter, wife of Richard Bedwell. [Ref]

  4. Grace Chandler was born about 1560. She married William Rogers on 3 Oct 1585. [Ref]

Thomas was born abut 1528, probably in Bishops-Stortford. [Ref] He was buried on 4 Jun 1611 in Bishops-Stortford, age 83. [Ref] He married Joane Unknown. [Ref] She was buried on 11 Mar 1606/7 in Bishops-Stortford. [Ref]

He was a churchwarden in 1562, 1563 and 1574. [Ref]

  1. Barbara Chandler was born about 1553. She is mentioned in her grandfather's will. [Ref]
  2. Agnes Chandler was buried on 20 Feb 1599/1600 in Bishops-Stortford.
  3. Henry Chandler was born about 1560 in Bishops-Stortford. He was buried on 17 Dec 1618 in Bishops-Stortford. He married Anne Unknown.
  4. Sarah Chandler was baptised on 5 Jul 1562 in Bishops-Stortford. She married John Ingham on 20 Sep 1580 in Bishops-Stortford. [Ref]
  5. Richard Chandler was born about 1565. He was buried on 2 Feb 1592 in Bishops-Stortford.
  6. Edward Chandler was born about 1568. He was buried on 9 Nov 1653 in Stortford. He was a silk weaver. [Ref] He had eight children. [Ref]
  7. William Chandler was baptised on 31 Aug 1570 in Bishops-Stortford. He was buried on 8 Jul 1590 in Bishops-Stortford. [Ref]

Tobias Chandler was born about 1551. [Ref] He was buried on 24 Oct 1629 at Bishops-Stortford. [Ref] He married Johane Mumford on 21 Sep 1574. [Ref] She was buried on 29 Jun 1618 at Bishops-Stortford. [Ref]

Tobias Chandler of Bishops-Stortford was a tanner. [Ref]

He was a churchwarden in 1598. [Ref]

In his will, dated 20 Aug 1627, he refers to daughters Margaret, Joan and Grace and sons John and Robert.

  1. Tobias Chandler was baptised on 21 Sep 1575. He married Katherine Johnson on 22 Apr 1604. [Ref] She died between 16 Apr 1662, when she wrote her will, and 4 Oct 1662, when it was proved. [Ref]
  2. Margaret Chandler was baptised on 13 Oct 1577. She died on 3 Feb 1645/6 in Roxbury. She married first Henry Monck. She married second William Denison.
  3. John Chandler was baptised on 4 Oct 1579. He was living in Bishops-Stortford in 1629. [Ref] He married Jane Miller on 18 Sep 1615. [Ref]
  4. George Chandler was baptisesd on 1 Nov 1581 in Bishops-Stortford. He died on 23 May 1628 in Bishops-Stortford. [Ref] He had nine children. [Ref]
  5. Thomas Chandler was baptised on 17 Dec 1583. He was buried on 11 Mar 1606/7. [Ref]
  6. Joane Chandler was baptised on 10 Apr 1586. She died young. [Ref]
  7. Joane Chandler was baptised on 23 Mar 1587/8. She died young. [Ref]

HENRY CHANDLER (abt 1560-1618) of Bishops-Stortford

Henry Chandler was born about 1560 in Bishops-Stortford. [Ref] He was buried on 17 Dec 1618 in Bishops-Stortford. [Ref] He married Anne Unknown about 1590. [Ref] She married second as his second wife John Miller, Sr. of Bishops-Stortford. [Ref]

In his will of 9 Dec 1618, Henry said that he was a glover of Stortford. He mentioned his wife Anne, his daughters Elizabeth and Sarah, his youngest son Samuel and his eldest son, William. [Ref]

Children of Henry Chandler and Anne Unknown. The baptisms are given in Moriarty [Ref].

  1. Richard Chandler was baptised on 21 Nov 1591. He died young. [Ref]
  2. William Chandler was baptised on 12 Oct 1595. He died on 26 Jan 1641/2 in Roxbury. He married first Alice Thorogood. He married second Agnes Bayford.
  3. Sarah Chandler was baptised on 11 Mar 1597/8.
  4. Elizabeth Chandler perhaps married John Brewer on 2 May 1619. [Ref]
  5. Samuel Chandler was baptised on 13 Oct 1605. He was buried on 11 May 1606. [Ref]
  6. Samuel Chandler was baptised on 19 Jul 1607. He married Margaret Gray on 29 Jun 1629. [Ref] He had two children. [Ref]

MARGARET CHANDLER (1577-1646)

Margaret was baptised on 13 Oct 1577. [Ref] She died on 3 Feb 1645/6 in Roxbury. [Ref] She married first Henry Monck. [Ref] He was buried on 10 Dec 1602. [Ref] She married second William Denison. [Ref]

William and Margaret emigrated to New England in 1631. [Ref]

WILLIAM CHANDLER (abt 1560-1642) of Bishops-Stortford and Roxbury

Parents: Henry Chandler and Anne Unknown

William Chandler was born 1560. [Ref] He died on 26 Jan 1641/2 in Roxbury. [Ref][Ref calls him a housekeeper and says 19 (11) 1641] He married first Alice Thorogood of Farnham on 29 Jan 1621/2 in Bishops-Stortford. [Ref] She was buried on 15 Jun 1625 in Bishops-Stortford. [Ref] He married second Agnes Bayford on 6 Nov 1625 in Farnham. [Ref]

William was a 'pointer': a maker of lace tags for fastening clothes. [Ref]

William was one of the Roxbury residents who, in 1634/43, paid for his goats to be tended. [Ref] He had land in Roxbury in 1634/43. [Ref]

In his 21:11 mo. 'called December' 1640 will, George Alcock of Roxbury left a bequest to his 'brother' Chandler. [Ref][Ref, brother in the church William Chandler].

When he died, the church record said, 'Christian & godly brothr dyed of a Consumption'. [Ref] Rev. John Elliot describes him (my spelling)

William Chandler came to N.E. about the year 1637: he brought four small children, Thomas, Hannah, John, William: his fifth child Sarah was born here; he lived a very religious and godly life among us & fell into a consumption, to which he had been long inclined; he lay near a year sick, in all which time, his faith, patience, and godliness and contention so shined, the Christ was much glorified in him; he was a man of weak points, but excellent faith and holiness, he was a very thankful man, and much magnified Gods goodness, he was poor, but God so opened the hearts of his neighbours to him that he never wanted that what was (at least in his esteem) very plentiful and comfortable to him; he died about the [blank] in year 1641, and left a sweet memory and savor behind him. [Ref quotes the Roxbury land and church records]

  1. Elizabeth Chandler was baptised on 10 Jan 1622/3 and buried on 30 Sep 1636.
  2. Sarah Chandler was baptised on 19 Dec 1624 and buried on 19 Jan 1626/7.

  1. William Chandler was baptised on 26 Mar 1627. He was buried there on 27 Nov 1633. [Ref]
  2. Capt. Thomas Chandler was baptised on 9 Aug 1628. He died early in 1702/3. [Ref] He married Hannah, the daughter of Daniel Brewer, who died on 25 Oct 1717 at Andover. [Ref] He had eight children. [Ref] He is called "my brother" in George Abbott's will. [Ref]
    Thomas was a blacksmith and an iron worker. [Ref] He was Representative to the General Court in 1678 and 1679. [Ref]

  3. Hannah Chandler was baptised on 22 May 1630. She died on 2 Jun 1711. She married first George Abbott. She married second Rev. Francis Dane.
  4. Henry Chandler was baptised on 13 Aug 1632. He died young. [Ref]
  5. Dea. John Chandler was baptised on 27 Jul 1634. He died on 15 Apr 1703 in Woodstock (then MA, now CT) on 15 Apr 1703. [Ref] He married Elizabeth Douglas, the daughter of William and Anna (Matlat or Motley) Douglas of Ipswich, Boston and New London, on 16 Feb 1658/9 in Roxbury. [Ref] She was born on 26 Aug 1641 in Boston and died on 23 Sep 1705 in New London. [Ref] He had eight children. [Ref] He was one of the original settlers of Woodstock. [Ref] His gravestone in the Woodstock burial ground says:

    68 YEARS DIED APRIL 15TH

  6. William Chandler was baptised on 20 Mar 1635/6. He died in 1698 in Andover [Ref] He married first Mary Dane on 18 or 24 Aug 1658 in Ipswich (recorded at Andover). [Ref][Ref says 24] Mary, the daughter of Dr. John and Eleanor (Clark) Dane and granddaughter of William's stepfather John Dane, was born about 1639 in Ipswich. [Ref] She died on 10 May 1679 in Andover. [Ref][Ref] William married second Bridget Richardson on 8 Oct 1679 in Andover or Chelmsford. [Ref says Chelmsford][Ref][Ref][Intention dated 6 Sep 1679, Ref] Bridget was the daughter of Maj. Thomas and Elizabeth Henchman and widow of James Richardson, all of Chelmsford. [Ref] She was the sister-in-law of Capt. Josiah Richardson. William is called "my brother" in George Abbott's will. [Ref]
    William is on a 19 May 1669 list of those who did not take the freeman's oath. [Ref]
  7. Sarah Chandler was born in Roxbury. [Ref] She married first William Cleves of Roxbury, who was killed by Indians in King Philip's War on 29 Apr 1676 in Sudbury. [Ref] She married second Unknown Wilson. [Ref] She married third Ephraim Stevens on 11 Oct 1688. [Ref] She married fourth Unknown Allen. [Ref]

HANNAH CHANDLER (bp 1630-1711) of Bishops-Stortford and Roxbury

Parents: William Chandler and Agnes Bayford

Hannah Chandler was baptised on 22 May 1630 in Bishops-Stortford. [Ref][Ref] She died on 2 Jun 1711, aged about 82, [Ref][Ref] in Andover. [Ref, Hannah (Chandler) Abbott, w. George] She is buried in the South Parish Burying Ground in Andover. [Ref] She married first George Abbott on 12 Dec 1646 in Roxbury. [Ref][Ref] She married second as his third wife her stepbrother Rev. Francis Dane, son of John Dane. [Ref][Ref]

Hannah came to New England with her parents in 1637. [Ref]

Hannah is a rare example of a woman in Massachusetts at the time conveying property in a deed alone. On 10 Feb 1706/7 she conveyed land to her sons: " ... I Hannah Abbott : alias Dane Relick to gorg Abbott late of Andover deceased for the natural afectean I bare to my sons : Timothy : Thomas : and Nathaniel Abbott : doe give to my sons : above named : all my rights in the common and undivided land in the Township of Andover aforesaid ..." [Ref, pp. 85-6]
