DANIEL BRADLEY (d. 1689) of Rowley and Haverhill m. Mary Williams
|
MARY BRADLEY m. James Heath

Generation 1

DANIEL BRADLEY (d. 1689) of Rowley and Haverhill

Parents: Unknown

Daniel Bradley was killed by Indians on 13 Aug 1689. [Ref] He married Mary Williams of Haverhill on 21 May 1662 in Haverhill. [Ref][Ref says 'probably'][Ref]

A Daniel Bradley, age 20, was a passenger on the Elizabeth of London on 8 Apr 1635. [Ref] A Daniel Bradley of Ipswich was made a freeman on 27 (1) 1649. [Ref] He was in Rowley in 1664. [Ref] He was in Haverhill in 1674. [Ref] He took the oath of allegiance in Haverhill on '28 [16] 77'. [Ref]

It appears that the closest that Daniel ever came to holding a public office was appearing on the grand jury at the 30 (7) 1651 Court at Ipswich. [Ref]

Daniel frequently testified in court cases. Henry Archer and John Baker were presented at the 28 (7) 1652 Court at Ipswich on suspicion of not putting six bushels of malt into each hogshead. Daniel testified against Henry Archer. [Ref] Joseph Fouler was presented at the same court on suspicion of wearing gold and silver lace; Daniel testified against him as well. [Ref] At the 27 (7) 1653 Court at Ipswich, William Vincent sued Edmund Marshall for defamation, saying that his wife was a witch. Daniel testified against Edmund Marshall. [Ref] On 28 Mar 1663 Daniel testified in Joshua Bradley's unsuccessful suit against John Godfrey for non-performance of a bargain. [Ref] Also on that date he testified in George Hadley's trespass case against Robert Haseltine. [Ref] A 3 Apr 1684 summons against Abraham Whittaker and his wife for not attending public worship, signed by the constable of Haverhill, lists Steven Dow and Daniel Bradley as witnesses. [Ref]

On at least one occassion Daniel was himself the subject of a court case: the 10 May 1660 Court at Ipswich fined Daniel for striking John Boynton. [Ref]

Daniel was apparently not a wealthy man. On a 1660/4 Rowley tax list, his rate is in the bottom fourth. [Ref]

The Daniel who testified in 1652 was probably an adult. This makes his marriage in 1662 late for a first marriage. If our Daniel is the one who came on the Elizabeth, then he was about 47 in 1662 - very old for a first marriage. Perhaps Mary was not his first wife.

In his will dated 24 Apr 1670 Thomas Dorman, Sr, aged about 78, left his wearing apparel to his cousin Daniel Bradley. [Ref 4;250]
