Dea. John Bennett is said to have been born in 1642. [Ref] He died on 22 Mar 1717/8, age 77, in Middleborough. [Ref][Ref, p. 81, says 21 Mar, age 76] He married Deborah Grover [Ref "is said to have"] in 1671 in Beverly. [Ref]

John was a weaver. [Ref] He is said to have been the son of Peter Bennett and a native of Bristol. [Ref][Ref, p. 81] He went first to Jamestown [Ref] in 1665. [Ref, p. 81, says Virginia] He went then to Beverly. [Ref] He moved to Salem and then to Weymouth. [Ref] In 1678 he went to Middleborough. [Ref] In 1692 he purchased a farm there. [Ref]

John Bennett was admitted to the Plymouth church in 1687. [Ref] Deborah, the wife of John Bennett, was dismissed from the church at Beverly to the church at Plymouth in 1687. [Ref]

John was on the petit jury at the Sep 1691 court in Plymouth. [Ref]

John Bennett and his wife Deborah were original members of the First Church of Middleborough, organised on 26 Dec 1694. [Ref, p. 81] He was ordained deacon at there on 8 Mar 1695. [Ref]

Capt. Peter Bennett was born in Sep 1674. [Ref] He was baptised on 30 May 1675 in Beverly. [Ref] He died on 22 Oct 1749. [Ref] He is buried in the Green Cemetery in Middleborough. [Ref] He married Priscilla Howland on 30 Oct 1700. [Ref][Ref][Ref, p. 53, says 20 Oct.]

Peter and Priscilla were fined on 16 Sep 1701; their first child was born five months after their marriage. [Ref]

Peter was a captain of the militia in Middleborough. [Ref] He was Selectman in 1715. [Ref]

In his will, written on 5 Oct 1749 and probated on 6 Nov 1749, he refers to his son Isaac; his brother Nathan Howland; the sons of his deceased son Joseph; the children of his deceased son Peter; his deceased son Nathan and his widow Jemima; his daughters Elizabeth Darling, Susanna Drew, Priscilla Miller, Deborah Thatcher and his deceased daughter Jael Edson. [Ref]

Peter was a relatively wealthy man. Inventory on his estate, taken 20 Nov 1649, amounted to £1,013,17 plus real estate worth £5,085.[Ref]

  1. Elizabeth Bennett was born on 28 Mar, probably 1701 in Middleborough. [Ref, p. 54] She died on 22 Jan 1774, age 73. [Ref][Ref, p. 205] She married John Darling [Ref] on 17 Oct 1721 in Middleborough. [Ref, p. 205] John was the son of Thomas and Joanna Darling. [Ref, p. 205] He signed his will on 14 Apr 1716; it was proved on 20 Sep 1716. [Ref, p. 205]
    John joined the First Church of Middleborough on 28 Mar 1742 as member 365; Elizabeth Darling joined on 7 Jul 1742 as member 423. [Ref] John and Elizabeth had eight sons and five daughters. [Ref]
  2. Isaac Bennett was born on 17 Jan 17__ in Middleborough. [Ref, p. 54] He died before 9 Jul 1760. [Ref, p. 206] He married Mary Drew on 24 Aug 1732 in Middleborough. [Ref, p. 206] Mary was the sister of Isaac's sister Susanna's husband John Drew.
  3. Lieut. Joseph Bennett was born on 16 Nov 1704 in Middleborough. [Ref][Ref, p. 54] He died on 3 Jan 1741/2 in Middleborough [Ref, p. 208] and is buried in the 'Old Cemetery at the Green'. [Ref] He married Thankful Sproat on 18 Nov 1724 in Middleborough. [Ref][Ref, p. 208, says 1725] Thankful, the daughter of Ebenezer and Experience (Howes) Sproat, was born on 28 Nov 1705 in Scituate, was baptised on 22 Jul 1711 in the Second Church of Scituate and died on 19 Feb 1788 in Middleborough. Susanna Bennett was born on 10 Jul 1707 in Middleborough. [Ref, p. 54] She was baptised as an adult on 22 Oct 1738 at the Halifax church. [Ref, p. 209] She died afer 13 Jun 1755. [Ref, p. 209] She married John Drew of Middleborough on 25 Jan 1727/8 in Middleborough. [Ref][Ref, p. 209]

Susanna Drew, the wife of John Drew, Jr. was baptised and received into full communion at the Halifax church on 22 Oct 1738. [Ref, p. 209]
