Both Joseph and his father testified in Thomas Johnson's trial for selling "strong waters" to the Indians. On 12 (2) 1671 Joseph, who deposed that he was about 26, said that if he gave a dram or two to the Indians, what was it to any man? [Ref 4;371]

Children of Joseph Ballard and Rebecca Johnson: The children's births are recorded in Andover, except Sarah's, Joseph's and William's. However these records are in poor shape. Some are apparently illegible and Penelope's is torn and her mother's name is missing. The deaths of Sarah, Benjamin, Joseph and William are also recorded in Andover. [Ref] One of the "Unknown" children may be the Ballard, whose widow Hannah Chandler died in Sep 1798 in Concord, Merrimack, NH on Sep 1798, age 88. [Ref]

  1. Sarah Ballard died on 3 Jan 1715/6. The record says that she was age about 22, but this is not consistent with her parents' marriage date.
  2. Elizabeth Ballard was born on 14 Jan 1700/1.
  3. Unknown Ballard was born in 1702.
  4. Joseph Ballard (perhaps the above Unknown) died on 29 Aug 1703.
